If you are like many people I talk to, you are numb. The daily onslaught of WOTDTDT is overwhelming. If this initialism in unfamiliar, it is because I just made it up to cover What Obscene Thing Did Trump Do Today. It seems that at least daily, and sometimes several times in one day, “The Donald” does something obnoxious or obscene.
He is the Energizer Bunny of crazy, the Epstein of sexual deviance, the KKK of white nationalism, the Joseph Stalin of self-promotion, the Jim Jones of messianic self-righteousness, and the Charles Ponzi of grift. He is the gift that keeps on giving, like herpes. He is all this and more. I can’t remember a single day where there wasn’t some “Breaking News” event that didn’t involve the epicenter of our ongoing national earthquake.
Like a hurricane controlled by a Sharpie, his erratic behavior keeps everyone guessing. Such behavior might have been beneficial in business deals where the goal is to keep an adversary off-balance, but it is an anathema to sound government. The word debacle comes to mind. It’s origin is from the French noun, débâcle, commonly used in historical reference to the breaking up of ice in a river during a spring thaw that results in a rushing flood of debris. It has evolved to mean a sudden, chaotic collapse, a total disaster, or a complete failure. That one word seems to sum up the Trump presidency, certainly the second term.
This second presidential term has been a blitzkrieg of aggressive, norm-shattering behavior with a rapid-fire sequence of executive actions, civil service overhauls, and hardline policies. His dismantling of democratic guardrails, targeting of political adversaries, and active reshaping of federal institutions, violates the intent of the founding fathers and the carefully crafted checks and balances they built into our system of government.
We have become numb to his elimination of Civil Service protections, the mass ouster of watchdogs, the federalizing of local law enforcement, and the gutting of the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section. We watch from the sidelines as he ramps up domestic crackdowns with aggressive immigration raids, drastically cuts federal funding of higher education, and uses his office for active retribution targeting anyone who publicly offends him.
We watch as a feckless congress stands idly by while the President gorges himself at the public trough and uses public policy announcements to tilt the stock market toward personal investments. We watch as his high-risk foreign policy decisions abandon his “America First” rhetoric of the campaign trail in favor of some “might is right” UFC-style platform.
We then sit in amazement as he ignores domestic financial affordability issues and spends his time using taxpayer monies to tear down monuments to erect gaudy casino-style edifices to his own greatness. I haven’t even touched on the damage done through his minion appointees like Pete Hegseth redlining females and persons of color to clean out the upper echelons of the military. Then there is the eradication of all negative references to historical missteps regarding slavery and indigenous peoples.
If our republic can survive through our 250th birthday still intact, we have 122 days before the midterms. Let’s use that time wisely. Start on that first day reminding people that the massive UFC “Claw” on the White House lawn was fabricated in Belgium before it was shipped to the U.S. for assembly. Let them know that the much-delayed Trump Mobile gold T1 phones he promised would be built in America, were in fact made in China. America First my ass.
Yes, we are numb but not dumb. We see him for what he is. We don’t need to try to convince his base of any of this. They are like the dog Kristi Noem shot, "aggressive, dangerous, and untrainable." RIP Cricket.
